Congratulations to Sr. Dorothy Bell RSCJ

On Wednesday 5th March Roehampton University conferred a 'Doctor of the University ‘Honoris Causa' on Sister Dorothy Bell. This distinction was a recognition of the pivotal role Dorothy has played in the continuation of Roehampton as a place of higher education and learning through decades. The atmosphere was dignified yet relaxed, with Dorothy looking resplendent in her doctoral gowns. The citation was delivered by the present Principal of Digby Stuart, Paul Hodges, who spoke eloquently of Dorothy's life and contribution to Roehampton over many decades. But the real star of the show was Dorothy herself, as she addressed the congregation in response. In a beautifully-delivered and compelling speech, she reminisced about the days when the federation at Roehampton was coming into being, and how complex were the negotiations concerning Digby Stuart.

Referring to the honour as a 'corporate doctorate' she paid tribute to past governors and staff, representatives of whom were in the audience.  She cited a child who, when asked who made her, replied "Well God made a bit of me but I grew-ed the rest myself". In good story-telling fashion, Dorothy then went on to make the analogy of how we all, as individuals and institutions, need to take responsibility for our development, building on the life given to us by God.

Talking to some of the Graduates after the ceremony, it was apparent that Dorothy's award had also been very meaningful to them.  Roehampton students are often first generation graduates and many are classed as mature students, because they are studying later in life. They had clearly been inspired by the picture of this charming and radiant eighty-something year old religious sister, who had given her life to God through the service of Education. There was no doubt in anybody's mind that whilst God has given her life in abundance, Dorothy has grown the rest herself!
