The Society of the Sacred Heart is an international religious order of women in the Catholic Church.
The women who are members of this order write RSCJ after their name. This means Religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in French.
Founded in 1800 by French woman Madeleine Sophie Barat with three companions in the aftermath of the French Revolution.
Madeleine Sophie wanted to heal the pain and division she saw in her own society by helping others to discover the love of God’s heart. She chose to do this primarily through education and spirituality.
Today there are 3,500 RSCJ present in 45 countries around the world. RSCJ take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and live in small communities, sharing prayer and reflection which supports and challenges us in trying to live according to gospel values.
