Bute Gardens
Bute Gardens, Hammersmith

Hammersmith has been a focus of community living spaces, and ministry since 1894 when we bought the redundant Diocesan Seminary building on Hammersmith Road and set up a community and school there. After having passed through many metamorphoses, the school is still there today as the Sacred Heart High school for Girls.

Alongside the school is Bute Gardens. Several small houses in that street were bought in the mid 1920’s, initially to be demolished and provide more space for the growing school, but only 3 were demolished before the others became ‘listed’ and could not be changed. Today they are used for our Provincial Offices, and as living spaces for RSCJ.

Dorothy Bell, Eileen Foster, Bernie Sacco and Pat Murphy currently live in Bute Gardens, and they share with us something of their lives there.
